Reading at Oakridge

Reading sits at the heart of the Oakridge curriculum. We believe that reading is a vital life skill which opens doors to learning, imagination and opportunity. Our aim is for every child to become a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader who can access the full curriculum and develop a lifelong love of books.

Our approach to reading is informed by the Department for Education’s Reading Framework, which highlights the importance of strong phonics teaching, reading fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, regular assessment and access to high-quality texts. At Oakridge, we ensure that children are taught the skills they need to read accurately, understand deeply and enjoy reading widely.

We teach reading through a carefully planned approach which supports children from the earliest stages of learning to read through to becoming skilled, thoughtful and independent readers.
