Our Curriculum at Oakridge

At Oakridge School, our curriculum is designed to ‘enhance the life chances of every pupil’ by providing rich, purposeful learning experiences that prepare them for life in modern Britain and beyond. We aim to nurture inquisitive, confident, and compassionate learners who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive as global citizens in the 21st century. We are committed to offering a principled and holistic education that nurtures the whole child - instilling a lifelong love of learning and a desire to make a positive contribution to society.

At Oakridge, we offer a broad, balanced, ambitious, and inclusive curriculum that follows the National Curriculum while being uniquely tailored to reflect the context and character of our school community. It celebrates diversity, promotes equality of opportunity, and inspires curiosity about the wider world.

Our curriculum is underpinned by six Golden Threads - key concepts that run through all areas of learning and provide a sense of purpose and cohesion across subjects. These threads have been carefully selected to reflect what we believe our pupils need to understand in order to become active, thoughtful, and responsible members of society:

  1. Democracy
  2. Social Mobility and Aspirations
  3. Equality and Diversity (Role of Women)
  4. Technology and Progress
  5. Environment
  6. Culture and Society

‘These threads are appropriate, ambitious and inspiring to underpin a curriculum for this community in the 21st century.’ Oakridge School Improvement Advisor.

Across most subjects, each unit is driven by an overarching Big Question, rooted in one of our six Golden Threads, which gives pupils a clear purpose for study and helps them make meaningful connections within and across subjects. These questions are sequenced for every year group and increase in complexity as pupils move through the school. By Year 6, children draw on their accumulated knowledge and experiences to tackle more demanding Big Thread Questions, leaving Oakridge as well-rounded, reflective learners ready for the next stage.

Golden Nuggets of Knowledge

Central to our curriculum are the Golden Nuggets - the essential, non-negotiable knowledge that pupils must acquire and retain within each subject. Subject leaders have carefully identified these key concepts to ensure clear progression and coherence across the curriculum.

Through explicit teaching, spaced retrieval, and opportunities for application, pupils commit these “must know” facts to long-term memory. This approach ensures they not only remember more but are also able to apply their knowledge in new and meaningful ways.

Meeting the Needs of All Learners

Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND, those who are disadvantaged, and pupils with EAL. We believe every child should experience success and challenge in their learning. Teachers adapt lessons to provide appropriate support and stretch, ensuring that every child can achieve their full potential.

Building Cultural Capital

We recognise the importance of developing our pupils’ cultural capital- the knowledge, behaviours, and experiences that help them to succeed in life. At Oakridge, we achieve this by offering opportunities that broaden pupils’ horizons and deepen their understanding of the world.

Our curriculum includes:

  • Educational visits and visiting experts that bring learning to life.
  • Opportunities to explore our local area, fostering pride in the community.
  • A focus on the arts, sports, and STEM, ensuring children develop a wide range of interests and skills.
  • Activities that promote well-being, character development, and resilience.

Through these experiences, pupils learn to appreciate diversity, value different perspectives, and understand their role in shaping the future.

Beyond the Classroom

Learning at Oakridge extends far beyond the classroom. We make full use of our extensive school grounds and local community to enhance learning experiences. Outdoor learning, enrichment activities, and cross-curricular projects help children make connections across subjects while nurturing their creativity and curiosity.

Curriculum Review and Impact

Our curriculum is continually reviewed and refined to ensure it remains purposeful, relevant, and effective. We monitor its impact through lesson visits, book looks, planning reviews, and pupil voice. This collaborative process ensures that our curriculum continues to evolve in response to the needs and ambitions of our pupils.

We measure success not only through academic achievement but through the personal growth, curiosity, and resilience of our pupils. Oakridge children leave us as confident, well-rounded individuals who are proud of their achievements and ready to make a positive contribution to society.

At Oakridge, our curriculum is designed to meet and exceed the expectations set out in the National Curriculum, ensuring that all pupils receive a broad, balanced, and ambitious education. To support the high-quality delivery of each subject, we follow a range of carefully chosen and evidence-informed schemes of learning. These schemes provide clear progression, consistency, and coherence across year groups while allowing teachers the flexibility to adapt lessons to meet the needs of our pupils.

We recognise that curriculum development is an ongoing process and that meaningful improvement takes time. We do not attempt to change everything at once. Instead, we prioritise key areas of the curriculum for development so that staff receive the training, resources, and support needed to deliver improvements successfully. These priority areas are known as our Spotlight Subjects, and they allow us to focus our efforts carefully and ensure that changes are sustained over time.

To guide this work, we follow the Education Endowment Foundation’s guidance, Putting Evidence to Work: A School’s Guide to Implementation. This approach helps us to make thoughtful decisions about how improvements are introduced and embedded across the school. It ensures that changes are based on evidence, carefully planned, and supported through training and ongoing evaluation.

By working in this structured way, we are able to strengthen teaching, support staff, and improve outcomes for pupils while maintaining a manageable workload. Most importantly, it ensures that our curriculum continues to grow and develop in a way that meets the needs of our children and prepares them for future success.

At Oakridge, we believe that a strong curriculum is never finished. It is continually strengthened so that every child receives the best possible education.
